Though your teeth may look smooth, their surfaces are covered in microscopic grooves and pits, all of which can trap and retain stains teeth whiteningfrom foods and drinks like coffee, tea, wine and berries. Fortunately, teeth whitening is just one of the many services offered at Garlitz Dentistry in Columbia, South Carolina. To learn how teeth whitening from Dr. Kyle Garlitz can give you a refreshed and brighter smile, read on.

How does teeth whitening work?

You've surely seen the teeth whitening kits and products lining the shelves of your grocery store or pharmacy. The chemical whitening agents used by your Columbia dentist are essentially a more concentrated and longer-lasting version of these treatments. They contain a combination of peroxides that, when placed in contact with your teeth, break apart the tiny stain-causing particles trapped within. The result for most patients is a noticeably brightened smile that can be up to eight shades whiter after just one appointment with Dr. Garlitz!

What's involved in the whitening process?

Your teeth are first evaluated by your Columbia dentist to make sure you are a candidate for whitening. Some stains caused by trauma or certain medications are not a surface-based problem and will need to be addressed in a different way. If you are a candidate - and most patients are - your Columbia dentist will show you a chart to determine the current shade of your teeth and discuss your goals for whitening with you. At your whitening appointment, your gums will be prepped by one of our trained staff members to ensure that no whitening gel comes into contact with them - while these chemicals are safe for the teeth, they can cause painful chemical burns to the gum tissue if not applied properly.

The gel will be applied and allowed to set for about 30 minutes, at which time your Columbia dentist will check your progress. Some patients' teeth may need a longer exposure time for the best results. After your treatment has finished, the gel will be rinsed away from your teeth and you'll be ready to go! At-home whitening kits can help with touch-ups; your Columbia dentist, Dr. Garlitz, will recommend the best products. With proper care, the results from an in-office whitening treatment can last up to a year.

If you think your teeth could use some brightening, the staff at Garlitz Dentistry in Columbia, South Carolina would be glad to discuss it with you! Give us a call to set up an appointment.
