It's hard to feel confident about your smile when your teeth are yellow or stained. Genetics or eating or drinking beverages that can stain teeth can dull your teeth. Luckily, teeth whitening offers an easy option to restore your sparkling smile. Dr. Kyle Garlitz of Garlitz Dentistry, your Columbia teeth whitening expert, shares information about the whitening process.Teeth Whitening

Professional teeth whitening produces better results

Drugstore kits can be effective in whitening teeth, but results aren't likely to be as dramatic as professional whitening services performed at your dentist's office. After just one hour in the dentist's chair, you can expect your teeth to be three to eight shades lighter. Choosing professional whitening services is a must if you have sensitive gums. Since some whitening products can irritate gums, your dentist will make sure that your gums are adequately protected before starting the whitening procedure.

Teeth whitening at your dentist's office

Your dentist uses strong whitening solutions that aren't available in stores. Before the teeth whitening procedure begins, your dentist places a barrier over your roots and gums to protect them. A hydrogen peroxide gel is then applied to your teeth and removed after an hour. Once the gel is removed, you'll notice significantly whiter, brighter teeth.

Teeth whitening at home

Your dental office may also offer a take-home teeth whitening kit. If you choose this option, your dentist will make a mold of your teeth that will be used to make plastic trays that fit your top and bottom teeth. You'll add whitening gel to the trays and put them in your mouth for about an hour. If you use take home trays, it may take several weeks to achieve the best results.

Keeping stains away

Avoiding foods that can stain your teeth, such as coffee, tea, cola, wine, blackberries and cherries, will help you keep your teeth pearly white. If you're careful about the foods and beverages you consume and avoid smoking, you can expect your teeth to stay white from six months to two years.
