Dealing with a cavity? A composite filling will fix it right up!

Almost all Americans deal with tooth decay, and unfortunately, more than a quarter of people have untreated cavities. While enamel is Cosmeticamazingly strong, it is often no match for sugar, which oral bacteria can feed off of and turn into potent, teeth-weakening acid. This is why visiting our Columbia, SC, dentist, Dr. Kyle Garlitz, is the best thing you can do for your smile, even if you aren’t experiencing any problems.

What are the warning signs of a cavity?

Many people may have dental decay or even a cavity and not realize it. This is why those six-month checkups are so important for your oral health! During these checkups, our Columbia, SC, family dentist can easily spot any cavities and treat them right away, thus preventing them from getting worse and causing any oral damage.

Of course, there are some cases in which someone with a cavity may experience,

  • A toothache
  • Sudden tooth sensitivity when consuming foods and drinks that are hot, cold, or sweet
  • A dark stain on the surface of the tooth
  • Holes or pits in the tooth

If you notice any changes in your smile it’s a good time to see a dentist.

How is a cavity treated?

The first thing we need to do is remove the decayed enamel to prevent the cavity from spreading deeper into the tooth. By catching the cavity early, we can often prevent the need for a root canal. Even though there are no nerves in tooth enamel, we will still numb the area around the tooth so you don’t feel any discomfort or sensitivity.

Then, we will remove any decayed enamel and clean off the tooth. As you might imagine, a tooth that has had a cavity removed is a bit weaker than it was when it was still fully intact—therefore, in order to rebuild and strengthen the tooth, we will need to place a dental filling. Since we know how important is it for our patients to get natural-looking restorations, we offer composite resin fillings that blend right in with the rest of your natural smile.

What should I expect when getting a tooth-colored filling?

Composite resin is a tooth-colored material that is also putty-like, making it easy to apply over the areas of the tooth that need to be rebuilt. First, we will choose the proper shade of resin that will match the tooth. Then, a thin layer is applied, shaped, and hardened into place with a dental light. We will continue to apply additional layers of the resin until the tooth is fully rebuilt. Composite resin is extremely resilient and can last anywhere from 5-7 years (or longer).
