Damaged teeth not only affect your appearance but can lead to further dental problems if they're not treated promptly. Our Columbia and Lexington, SC, dentist, Dr. Kyle Garlitz at Garlitz Cosmetic and Family Dentistry, explains how crowns protect and stabilize damaged teeth.
What are crowns?
Whether you call them crowns or caps, these restorations offer valuable benefits for damaged teeth. They're created with durable materials, such as porcelain, porcelain-fused-to-metal, ceramic, and resin, and are designed to last 10 to 15 years or longer. Hollow crowns fit over teeth after they been reduced in size slightly. When you visit our Columbia or Lexington office for your first crown appointment, we'll reduce your tooth and make an impression of your mouth. We'll send the impression to the dental lab that will create your crown, then craft a temporary crown for you. You'll wear the temporary crown until your permanent crown is ready, which usually takes about two weeks.
How do crowns protect teeth?
Fragile teeth, such as those that are cracked or brittle, are more likely to break. Crowns completely encase the teeth preventing them from breaking. Every time you take a bite of food, your crown, rather your tooth, absorbs those strong biting forces.
Brittle teeth are inherited in some cases, but may also occur as a natural result of aging. Although these teeth may look fine, they may not be able to handle continual pressure if you don't receive a crown. Crowns may also be recommended if your teeth have become more fragile after you receive root canal therapy or a large filling.
Crowns also restore teeth that are broken or have large chips in them. Broken teeth can be quite painful if exposed to the air. Crowns cover the teeth, stopping the pain. They also restore the normal shape, height, and width of your teeth.
Do crowns have other uses?
Crowns are frequently used to conceal imperfections and flaws in teeth, particularly those that affect more than one surface of a tooth. The restorations offer the ideal way to transform oddly shaped or crooked teeth or conceal discolorations caused by tetracycline use, trauma or large fillings.
